Phylogenetic study of the Chikungunya virus circulating in the Indian Ocean IOR – CHIKV

Lead Author: Oula Itani (PRS) and Ralph Huits

Status: Analyzing Data

Large-scale outbreaks in the Eastern Indian Ocean region (IOR) were the prelude to explosive chikungunya epidemics affecting millions of people in South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific region, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The aim of the study is to analyze the genetic evolution of the chikungunya virus currently circulating in the Indian Ocean region, which will provide a better understanding of the re-emergence of this virus and its circulation.
