The Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH), recent media reports, and an email today from the Singapore Site director, Poh Lian Lim have highlighted the risk of local Zika virus (ZIKV) transmission in Singapore. According to the MOH website, here have been 41 confirmed cases of local Zika virus infection in Singapore including 36 that were identified through active testing of potentially infected persons. All are residents or workers in one area of Singapore so transmission thus far appears to be localized. Please be alert to the possibility of ZIKV in travelers returning from the city and surrounds. In addition, there continue to be cases of Zika identified in Miami in the state of Florida, USA. Most of these have occurred in two areas of Miami including Miami Beach. There have been a few additional cases identified in other counties of Florida. Please notify GeoSentinel® of any suspected cases. Daytime mosquito bite protection should be recommended for travelers to Florida and Singapore (where a triple arboviral risk exists: DENV, CHIKV and ZIKV). Pregnant travelers should be particularly vigilant and adherent to personal protection measures against mosquito bites.
