A few weeks ago we notified you about the identification of Zika virus in Brazil. On Friday there was a ProMED report of the first case of Zika virus in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Given the widespread distribution of Aedes spp. mosquitos on the island of Hispaniola, there is great potential for spread within the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The implication is that we now need to have Zika, chikungunya, and dengue in the differential for travelers to this part of the Caribbean (in addition to malaria).
