Upgraded Zika notices with recommendations for pregnant travelers

After its initial identification in Brazil in May, 2015, Zika virus has spread rapidly throughout the Americas. Recently, a possible link between Zika virus infection in pregnant women and the development of fetal microcephaly has surfaced. Today, the US CDC will issue travel warnings (attached), with special mention of Zika virus in pregnancy. Please be aware of this rapidly developing situation and counsel women of childbearing age who are planning travel to the Americas accordingly. Daytime mosquito bite prevention is key. Also, please keep the epidemiology of this virus in mind when evaluating ill travelers. If any of you have questions about Zika diagnosis (recognizing that there can be cross reaction with dengue and other flaviviruses in serological tests), please feel free to contact us.
