During the last few months, we have noted an increase in the reporting of dengue fever in travelers from Cuba. Today we were notified by Israel Molina (BAR) that they have seen 9 patients with dengue from Cuba in the last 10 days. Similarly, Marta Díaz Menéndez (MDD) has also been seeing increased number of dengue cases including one with severe dengue. We have done a quick review of the GeoSentinel database and have identified 25 dengue cases in travelers to Cuba since the beginning of 2022 (and one case in November 2021). Although reporting of dengue from Cuba to PAHO tends to be limited, the Miami Herald has recently alerted its readers to this outbreak: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/cuba/article263653573.html
We would like you all to be on the alert for dengue in travelers returning from Cuba and would appreciate your entering these into the database in a timely manner. We are planning to do a rapid analysis for a brief epidemiological report later this month (led by Marta) so please enter any cases that you might have seen soon (for GeoSentinel sites) or notify us if you have seen cases (Affiliate Members and TropNet members) by sending an email to Aisha Rizwan (geosentinel@geosentinel.org) and copying David Hamer (dhamer@bu.edu).
Also it will be important to counsel any travelers who might be going to Cuba about the increased risk and the need for personal protection measures to reduce mosquito bites.
Details are available in a ProMed posting: https://promedmail.org/promed-post/?id=8705055
