Given the rapid development of the Zika virus outbreak in the Americas (and to a lesser extent in Oceania and Cape Verde) and the possible association between infection in pregnancy and adverse fetal outcomes, many sites have informed us that they are actively screening pregnant women for Zika infection. Given the importance of screening, we have decided to add a new code for Zika screening (843) and will be paying incentives for post-travel pregnant women who undergo screening for Zika virus infection. If they are found to be infected with Zika virus, then the usual code (805) should be used. The new code (843 – ZIKA SCREENING) is scheduled to go live on March 1st (next Tuesday). We also are going to be discussing a modification of the diagnostic criteria for Zika infection (805) based on the recently released WHO criteria and/or the soon to be released updated CDC diagnostic criteria. We will inform you when this change takes place.
