Non-tuberculous mycobacteria infections among medical tourists to the Dominican Republic

The CDC Travelers’ Health Branch is tracking a multi-state outbreak of rapidly growing rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacteria infections (e.g. Mycobacterium abscessus, M. cheloneae) among medical tourists who reported receiving cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic (DR). Since the start of 2017, cases have been identified in 7 U.S. states, and residents from other nations may have also become infected. Most, but not all, patients received their care at the Centro Internacional de Cirugia Plastica Avanzada (CIPLA) in Santo Domingo, DR.
