Several cases of monkeypox have been identified in the United Kingdom (UK_ since early May). These include a woman who returned from Nigeria in early May, two members of the same household without recent travel (source of exposure unknown), and, most recently, 4 men who have sex with men (MSM) thought to have acquired monkeypox in London. While two of the four MSM have been linked, there do not appear to be any association with the first three cases. All patients are in isolation and being carefully monitored.

Please be alert to potential monkeypox cases in travelers returning from Nigeria and other areas of central, west Africa such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo where this disease is endemic. Patients with monkeypox typically present with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. This is a highly contagious disease that is associated with a case fatality rate of about 10%. For more details, please see: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/monkeypox.
Please email the OPI at geosentinel@geosentinel.org if you see any patients who you suspect might have monkeypox.
