Media report of a yellow fever death in a Chilean tourist who visited Ilha Grande

Cecilia Perret Perez from the GeoSentinel® Santiago, Chile (CHL) site has just informed us of a media report describing the death today of a 35-year old male, Chilean tourist who allegedly died of yellow fever in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The deceased, who was not vaccinated against yellow fever and, according to reports, had an anti-vaccine philosophy, traveled to Brasil, Río de Janeiro on December 29, 2017 and stayed on the island Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro state. He started with symptoms a week ago. According to his sister, there are other 2 Chilean tourists admitted to the same hospital in Rio with a diagnosis of yellow fever. A ProMed posting describes a death (Nr. 5 below) from yellow fever on Ilha Grande and media reports are suggesting that there is an outbreak in the area. This sad situation provides further evidence of the importance of vaccinating travelers to Brazil especially if they plan travel to rural and even peri-urban locations.
