Hilmir Asgeirsson, Hedvig Glans and Sara Roth de Albuquerque from our GeoSentinel site in Stockholm report a number of UNHCR refugees who have just arrived from refugee camps in Niger with 6 confirmed and hospitalized cases of falciparum malaria. There are at least three more cases in other hospitals in Sweden. All patients arrived from Niger last week around October 16th. Five of the six cases originate from Eritrea and one from South-Sudan. According to their report, the airplane had 55 passengers/refugees arriving from Niger. Please be alert to possible malaria in travelers returning from these areas.
