Legionnaires’ disease ex United Arab Emirates

Site: Karolinska University Hospital

Hilmir Àsgeirsson, Stockholm GeoSentinel® Site Director, has just alerted us to recent cases of Legionella in travelers returning from UAE / Dubai (4 cases). They traveled on 3 different airlines (Qatar airways, Emirates and Norwegian) and used different hotels/accommodations. They may all have visited the Dubai shopping mall. A search of the GeoSentinel® database shows 7 other cases of Legionella reported since June with UAE / Dubai as exposure area. These 7 cases were reported by the Nordic sites in Stockholm, Oslo and Aarhus hinting at a possible epidemiological link. Sporadic and epidemic legionellosis has a worldwide distribution. The bacteria are commonly present in air conditioning systems and in water systems such as showers and hot tubs. Please be alert to Legionella ex UAE and let us know of any cases and details of possible exposure.
