Dear GeoSentinel® Site Directors and Co-Directors, Johnnie Yates (HON) has alerted us to an ongoing outbreak of hepatitis A on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. There have been 52 cases identified over the past few weeks with the first onset of illness occurring mid-June. Although recently a food service employee at an ice cream shop tested positive, the actual source of the outbreak has not yet been determined. GeoSentinel® members should suspect hepatitis A infection in travelers returning from Oahu (the other islands have not been affected thus far) who present with fever, fatigue, jaundice or GI symptoms within a compatible time frame. We have attached a copy of the most recent state health department press release (dated July 12) with this email.
