In December 2016, we received information from an Affiliate member, Dr. Sylvia Lemos Hinrichsen (Recife, Brazil) regarding the occurrence of cases of myalgia and “black urine” in Salvador, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Dr. Hinrichsen was invited to present on this outbreak at the GeoSentinel® meeting in Barcelona. An article describing these cases “Clinical and laboratory evidence of Haff disease – case series from an outbreak in Salvador, Brazil, December 2016 to April 2017” has now been published in EuroSurveillance http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleId=22816.This interaction illustrates the contribution that can be made by our network Affiliate members, now numbering over 200. It is important for travel medicine physicians to be alert in case of patients returning from Salvador, Brazil with myalgia and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis to consider Haff disease as a possible differential diagnosis.
