The Zika virus epidemic in the Western Hemisphere continues to rapidly expand with new cases reported in the last few days in Ecuador and Haiti. We are writing this follow-up email to urge you to report any new cases of Zika virus infection (see definition below) to GeoSentinel® as rapidly as possible. We are tracking this epidemic very closely and sharing data as needed with relevant public health authorities. Given the increasing evidence of adverse impacts on newborns if the infection is acquired during pregnancy, please counsel intending travelers on anti-vector measures (especially the use of effective insect repellents). Consider advising against travel for pregnant women who anticipate visiting countries with ongoing transmission.
