Emmanuel Bottieau from the Antwerp site has just reported a confirmed case of East African trypanosomiasis in a tourist with exposure in Uganda. Possible areas of acquisition, based on the travel itinerary, are the Queen Elisabeth Park and Murchinson Falls. This female patient has received a course of Suramin and the evolution is favorable. This is a rare diagnosis for Uganda. Sites should be alert due to the expanding geographical range of HAT and the increasing popularity of bush safaris and nature reserve travel. Travelers should be advised on daytime bite prevention against the tsetse fly particularly impregnation of appropriate safari clothing (repellents are inadequate as the tsetse fly is attracted by visual rather than olfactory cues).
