Dengue in Hong Kong

Dengue in Hong Kong

Site: The University of Hong Kong

On June 22nd, Sarah Borwein (HKG) was notified by Hong Kong authorities of a patient with locally acquired dengue fever. According to Sarah, there were no cases of dengue fever from 2003 to 2013, then there was a a cluster of four cases in one family (that might have been due to a mosquito transported back from Thailand in their luggage). In 2014, there were a few cases of local transmission. Hong Kong does not have a Aedes aegypti, but it does have Ae. albopictus, a less efficient vector but still a concern. Guangdong had a large outbreak of dengue fever last year and southern China is anticipated to have worsening transmission this year relative to last year. Please consider dengue as a potential diagnosis in travelers returning from southern China and Hong Kong.
