Dengue, Easter Island, Chile On Feb 20th, a case of dengue in a 51-year old woman, resident on Easter Island, who had not travelled abroad, was diagnosed. She had a past history of dengue during the early outbreak of DEN-1 in 2002. Lab results are dengue IgM positive and very high IgG, compatible with a second dengue infection. PCR negative in a late sample. The Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation. The most recent case of dengue on Easter island was reported in 2011. Implications for travellers: Practise daytime mosquito bite protection to protect against infected mosquitoes. No efficient repellents are available on the island so travellers should have their own supplies. Do not use aspirin is case of suspected dengue fever.
