Dengue ex West Africa, specifically, Burkino Faso

Several agencies have reported an outbreak of dengue fever in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, with an estimated 645 cases and 7 deaths. The GeoSentinel® database has three cases of travel-related dengue ex Burkina Faso in 2016 and other earlier cases.

Please consider dengue in the differential diagnosis of febrile illness in travelers returning from Burkina Faso and neighboring countries. Recommend 24/7 mosquito bite protection for intending travelers.

A paper earlier this year identified dengue as a common cause of non-malarial fever in Ouagadougou. The serotypes observed were DENV2, DENV3 and DENV4. Infect Dis Poverty. 2016 Apr 5;5:23. doi: 10.1186/s40249-016-0120-2.

Let us know if you have further cases that haven’t yet been entered into the database as this may warrant a ProMed report.
